Classification of Hydraulic Turbine

Classification of Hydraulic Turbine

  1. Based on the head and quantity of water available.

           a)  Impulse Turbine - It requires high head and small quantity of flow of water.

           b)  Reaction Turbine - It requires low head and high quantity of flow of water.

      2. According to action of water on moving blades.

          a) Impulse Turbine - Ex. Pelton Turbine.

          b) Reaction Turbine -  Ex.  Francis Turbine, Kaplan Turbine, Propeller Turbine.

      3. According to direction of flow of water in the runner.

          a) Tangential Flow Turbine - Ex. Pelton Turbine

          b) Radial Flow Turbine - (no more used)

          c) Axial Flow Turbine -  Ex. Kaplan Turbine

          d) Mixed radial and axial flow Turbine - Ex. Francis Turbine.

       4. According to direction of flow of shaft.

           a) Horizontal Shaft - Ex. Pelton Turbine

           b) Vertical Shaft - Ex.  Francis Turbine, Kaplan Turbine.
